Because I Don't Do What I Want

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/1/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 7

Because I don't do what I want,

But do the thing I hate.

I agree that the law is good,

To help us to go straight.

Evil is always close at hand.

That is itself a law.

My flesh has a mind of its own.

This is a mortal flaw.

I’m enslaved to the law of God,

In my mind completely.

But my flash is enslaved to sin,

Yet Jesus sets me free.

Come to Me All Who Are Weary

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/2/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 11

Come to me all who are weary,

And I will give you rest.

Jesus declared. So, it shall be.

We all will be so blessed.

Like a Good Shepherd Jesus knew,

How to care for his sheep.

No matter what, he'll see us through.

And thus, Jesus will us keep.

There will be times, this Jesus knew,

When life is challenging.

Take time in prayer for you to do,

Some holy recharging.

Isaac's Descendants

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/3/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Genesis 25

We read of Isaac’s descendants,

Grandsons of Abraham.

Two nations would be combatants.

In the womb it all began.

Esau was the first to be born,

A hunter he would be.

His birthright from him would be torn,

Along with his legacy.

Then Jacob came, the younger son,

His hand gripping Esau’s heel.

For his mother, he was the one,

Whose destiny she would seal.

Here we have, in one family,

Two cultures that would divide.

Although related, they would be,

Living apart side by side.

Some Live According to the Flesh

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/4/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 8

Some live according to the flesh,

With minds on things below,

But those who live by the spirit,

In the spirit they do grow.

To set the mind on flesh is death,

And life will waste away.

The spirit brings us life and peace.

Lord, help us to live that way.

Those in the flesh cannot please God,

They're hostile to God, too.

They do for themselves and not God,

In everything they do.

Jesus Taught Using Parables

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/5/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 13

Jesus taught using parables,

Wisdom in story form.

With these he taught the disciples,

Through these words faith was born.

Seeds were scattered along the way.

Some seeds fell on the road.

Some fell among the rocks and clay.

Such words sound like a code.

Christ's words were scattered in this way,

For those with ears to hear.

They took to heart all he did say.

To them his words became clear.

Upon good soil some seeds did fall,

The word of God thus grew.

Receptively faith can grow tall.

Such faith can grow in you.

To Jacob God Made a Promise

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/6/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Genesis 28

To Jacob God made a promise,

When one night he did rest.

An Angel stairway revealed this,

That by God he would be blessed.

Has on his journey Jacob went,

Of vision he was shown.

If you would go where he was sent,

He would never be alone.

Take time today and with God pray,

That God will be your guide.

Envision God with you today,

As you walk side by side.

Paul to the Romans thus Did Write

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/8/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 8

Paul to the Romans thus did write,

To say there was a split,

Between eternal life and death,

Between the flesh and Spirit.

He affirmed we are children of God,

And joint heirs with Jesus.

We will be glorified with him,

For the Spirit lives in us.

As Christians we're not in the flesh,

We are in the spirit.

In our soul we are made whole,

For the spirit dwells in it.

Jesus Spoke Using Parables

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/9/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 13

Jesus spoke using parables,

To teach of God's Kin-dom.

Using stories relatable,

Jesus shared God's wisdom.

We often are much more direct,

To show people the way,

But through wisdom, might we connect,

Through what we do not say.

How can we help people work out,

And discover God's way?

Might they learn who overcome doubt?

Let's hope and let us pray.

We Hear People's Cries

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/9/2026

(Tune: We Shall Overcome)

We hear people's cries.

We hear people's cries.

We hear people's cries today.

Oh, we will reply,

When people cry.

For we hear people's cries today.

We despise the lies.

We despise the lies.

We despise the lies today.

Oh, we will respond.

The light will dawn.

For we despise the lies today.

We'll proclaim the truth.

We'll proclaim the truth.

We'll proclaim the truth today.

The lies we must deny,

So, we reply,

That we'll proclaim the truth today.

If God Is for Us

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/10/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 8

If God is for us, Paul did write,

Who is against us?

Almighty God with power and might,

Gave to us Jesus.

Who is to condemn? It is Christ,

Who died and rose again.

For us Jesus was sacrificed,

To forgive us all our sins.

Who will separate us from Christ,

Will affliction or sword?

Upon the cross Christ paid the price.

We've been ransomed by the Lord.

Jesus Talked about Mustard Seeds

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/11/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 13

Jesus talked about mustard seeds,

And how much they did grow.

He saw the people and their needs,

Spoke what they needed to know.

He spoke about treasures hidden,

Found in another's field.

The field was quickly bought and then,

The value was revealed.

A merchant found a pearl at last,

Of the greatest value.

To have it he gives all he has,

That's how Jesus values you.

Here we find in each parable,

Someone who does something.

Jesus is the variable,

Who values us. Let us sing.

Jacob Wrestled with an Angel

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/12/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Genesis 32

Jacob wrestled with an angel.

Jacob wrestled with God.

His name was changed to Israel.

And then limped when he trod.

He wrestled with his family,

With Laban and Esau.

A wrestler was his legacy,

The best you ever saw.

Likewise, with himself he wrestled,

Like thus he wanted more.

The Lord's blessing was not withheld,

He was blessed for evermore.

Paul Spoke the Truth

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/13/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 9

Paul spoke the truth. He did not lie.

What is the truth for us?

Upon Jesus we can rely,

The truth for us is Jesus.

The Israelites to Christ he'd bring,

For Christ they had despised.

For them Paul would do anything,

If only they realized.

They had the covenants and laws,

But all this they did miss.

Christ offers grace for all their flaws.

Jesus is the promise.

Jesus Looked up to the Heavens

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/15/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 14

Jesus looked up to the heavens,

He took and broke the bread.

He saw God beyond the problem,

We should look there instead.

When there are troubles in our world,

Let us so concentrate.

God the creator will provide.

We have much to celebrate.

When there were thousands without food,

Jesus showed us the way.

In all we do give God the praise.

Like Jesus let us pray.

Of All the Sons Jacob Had

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/16/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Genesis 37

Of all the sons that Jacob had,

He loved Joseph the best.

So, even as a teenage lad,

Joseph was the best dressed.

Because their father loved him so

His brothers hated him.

They threw him down a well below.

They tried to do him in.

They sold him into slavery,

When traders came their way.

God would work through their treachery.

Joseph's dream began that day.

Whenever Good News Is Proclaimed

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/17/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 10

Whenever good news is proclaimed,

To those who fear defeat,

Those evangelists, it is claimed,

Have the most beautiful feet.

Like calluses on workers hands,

From many laborious works,

The feet that have crossed many lands,

Also bear well-worn marks.

When we reach those gates finally,

What will we have to show?

Have we shared our faith, faithfully,

That others might come to know?

When the Disciples Were at Sea

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/18/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 14

When the disciples were at sea,

They thought they saw a ghost.

They feared their deaths undoubtedly,

For they were far from the coast.

“Take heart and do not be afraid,”

Jesus called from the sea.

Upon peter's heart it was laid,

That with Jesus he might be.

When Jesus said, “Come.” Peter went,

And walked upon the sea.

Reassured by Jesus’ ascent,

He stepped out confidently.

As waves and wind both swirled around,

Peter began to fear.

His sure footing could not be found,

Fortunately, Christ was near.

With the Lord's help Peter was raised,

And retrieved from the waves.

Likewise, for us may Christ be praised,

For we know that Jesus saves.

At Some Point All Will Be Revealed

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/20/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Genesis 45

At some point all will be revealed.

It is all in God's time.

The broken hearts will all be healed,

By the Lord's grace sublime.

Here in this life, we merely see,

Like in a mirror dim.

In God's timing and clarity,

We will be set free from sin.

All Joseph's brothers knew him not,

Until he said his name.

When in God's presence you are brought,

You will never be the same.

Though We've Been Disobedient

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/22/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 11

Though we've been disobedient,

And from God we have strayed,

God's mercy is most evident.

God's love has been displayed.

Though they'd rejected the Good News,

Paul knew what he would do.

Paul had compassion for the Jews,

And for the Gentiles too.

A Woman's Faith Changed Evertything

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/23/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 15

A woman's faith changed everything,

When to Christ she cried out.

Would Jesus help her with something,

She believed without a doubt.

She asked for mercy from Jesus,

For her daughter was ill.

But she was one of them not us,

He thought that was not God's will.

The Canaanite woman replied,

That dogs ate the crumbs too.

Christ's ministry became worldwide,

It's a mission we're called to.

The Israelites in Egypt Land

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/24/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Exodus 1-2

The Israelites in Egypt land,

Were severely oppressed.

They suffered much at pharaoh's hand.

They were given no rest.

Despite hardships the people grew,

Their numbers multiplied.

Pharaoh decided what to do,

The baby poise all must die.

One mother hid her baby boy,

In order that he'd live.

A floating basket she'd deploy,

For a chance at life to give.

Pharaoh's daughter rescued the boy,

When floating by he came.

His own mother she would employ,

Moses would be his name.

To This Age Do Not Be Conformed

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/25/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Romans 12

To this age, do not be conformed,

To the Romans, Paul wrote,

Renew your minds and be transformed,

Let all listeners take note.

We will discern God's will for us,

And do all we can do.

Humbly proclaimed the Lord Jesus,

By the faith God's given you.

In Christ we have all become one,

Though our gifts aren't the same.

Together may God's will be done,

As we praise God's holy name.

When Jesus Asked What People Thought

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/26/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Matthew 16

When Jesus asked what people thought,

What did the people say?

They thought he was a great prophet.

Who is Christ for you today?

Some see Jesus as a rabbi,

Who taught us how to pray.

Others see him as a good guy.

Who is Christ for you today?

Some believe he was just a man,

Who lived then passed away.

Peter perceived, the great I Am.

Who is Christ for you today?

Some believe he did miracles,

Who had Good News to say.

We're called to be his disciples,

Who believed in Christ today.

Deborah Was Judge in Israel

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/27/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Judges 4-5

Deborah was judge in Israel,

She had a song to sing.

She shared the story of Jael,

Who did her mighty thing.

Jael offered to Sisera,

A place for him to hide.

She offered care etcetera,

And by her hand he died.

Peace reigned again for forty years.

People sang Deborah’s praise.

Israel raised her name with cheers.

Peace ruled throughout her days.

Who is God raising up today,

To teach us a new song,

To bring justice and peace our way,

That all might sing along?

At Horeb the Lord Met Moses

                                  Jeffrey B. Childs 6/29/2026

(Tune: Azmon UMH 57) Exodus 3

At Horeb the Lord met Moses,

A place of holy ground.

When listening to what the Lord says,

Where might your place be found?

The Lord had heard the people's plea,

As slaves they were oppressed.

Moses would lead them to be free,

And the people would be blessed.

Moses wanted to know God's name.

“I Am,” is what God said.

Salvation Moses would proclaim,

As the people he led.
